Food Safety Recertification Class and Test Fee
FROM: Brigette Reichenbaugh, Health Department
Department: Health Department

Information
RESOLUTION:
Resolved, the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners does hereby approve the Calhoun County Public Health Department Food Safety Recertification Class and Test Fee.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Calhoun County Public Health Department (CCPHD) respectfully requests that the Board of Commissioners (BOC) approve a newly proposed Food Safety Recertification Class and Test Fee of $75.00.
BACKGROUND:
As the state begins to reopen, Environmental Health has begun increasing the frequency of restaurant inspections. We are discovering that many of our certified food safety managers are due for their re-certification.  Michigan law requires food service establishments to have food safety certified managers on site, and the County's Health Department is one of the only providers of this certification within our County.

Currently, a $148 BOC approved fee is required for this re-certification and includes a full day schedule which consists of six class and two test hours. Many of our current certified managers could benefit from a reduced schedule and fee that requires only a review of certain materials and the test.

The CCPHD is requesting to host a review/test class to cover the necessary materials of the test in a condensed version to aid restaurant owners in their re-certification. This class would be 3.5 hours long and would cover 1.5 hours of review and 2 hours of time to complete the test.

A proposed new reduced fee of $75 will cover recertification only, effective immediately, to meet the current need and keep restaurants within guidelines of operating with a certified food safety manager.

SUMMARY:
The Calhoun County Public Health Department requests that the Board of Commissioners approve the proposed new reduced level fee as noted.

Fiscal Impact
BUDGETARY IMPACT:
It is estimated that 75 certified managers may enroll in this re-certification course for the rest of FY21, generating $5,625 in CCPHD revenue for this budget year.
